Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom is under construction, with an estimated 2029 opening that Disney has not confirmed.
Latest update
Piston Peak National Park is under active construction in the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint at Magic Kingdom. A tower crane stood at the center of the site by September 11, 2026, with foundation work and excavation continuing around it near the Haunted Mansion and the former Liberty Square Riverboat Landing. Aerial photos taken September 20, 2026 show the full construction zone extending from the Frontierland edge deep into former backstage areas, with staged transplanted trees and a large graded area at the upper edge of the site.
Disney has not confirmed an opening year; a potable water permit filed in February 2026 targets infrastructure completion by December 2027, and a separate general construction permit naming Balfour Beatty was filed in April 2026, with the typical 12 to 18 months required for interior fit-out and ride testing after infrastructure is complete placing a 2029 opening as a speculative estimate.
About Piston Peak National Park
Part of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom, Piston Peak National Park is a Cars-themed wilderness of towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers, and impressive geysers, built on the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint in Frontierland. Inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history of the American Frontier and its national parks, the land uses a style of architecture called Parkitecture to harmonize its buildings with the natural environment. The land's main attraction, Cars Ridge Run Rally, sends guests on an off-road race up a snow-covered mountain peak and through a geyser field, finishing past Lightning McQueen and Mater at the finish line. The second attraction, Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along, places a massive school-bus-sized Audio-Animatronic of Miss Fritter from Cars 3 at the center of a family-friendly demolition derby experience.
Aerial timeline
The tower crane stands at the center of the Piston Peak site, with crews actively excavating and preparing foundations around it, particularly in the area closest to the Haunted Mansion and the former Liberty Square Riverboat Landing. Wide overview photos capture the full construction zone stretching from the Frontierland edge deep into the former backstage areas, with graded land, excavated pits, large quantities of staged pipes and concrete components, and temporary construction roads filling what was the Rivers of America. At the upper edge of the zone, mature trees transplanted from the former riverway are staged adjacent to a large graded area that may serve as a future expansion pad.
A tower crane is now visible at the center of the Piston Peak construction site, rising above the graded terrain and signaling the start of vertical construction. The aerial overview captures the full extent of the site relative to the surrounding Frontierland and Liberty Square areas, with the crane positioned in the interior of the land where the main show structures are planned.
Sand grading and fill work continues throughout the site, with the drainage pipe sections visible in late June now completely buried under the graded earth. Fill is being placed between the existing Frontierland grade and the Piston Peak retaining wall, with sand also being excavated from the berm adjacent to the Haunted Mansion for use on the site. A wide overview captures the full Piston Peak and Villains Land construction zone, with the retaining wall and graded terrain clearly visible relative to the surrounding park.
The retaining wall running parallel to the Frontierland boardwalk is nearly complete, with the final section still being cast near the former Riverboat Landing. Crews have poured and graded sand in the wide space between the wall and the construction walls in front of Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, where a green conveyor belt runs over the wall to bring in additional fill. Near the center of the site, sections of drainage pipe with vertical concrete ends are staged and ready to be buried, and utility work including potable and reclaimed water lines is visible across the graded land.
A crane and smaller retaining walls are visible near the former Liberty Belle dock, with the full construction site stretching across the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint. Concrete berms extend across the site, indicating ongoing waterway reshaping and terrain grading, and the scale of the transformation is clearly visible from the air.
The Mike Fink Keel Boat Landing demolition is now complete, with only remnant structures near the Haunted Mansion entrance remaining. A separate aerial overview captures the full Piston Peak and Villains Land construction zone, with concrete retaining walls in a stepped or angled configuration, staged materials, and heavy equipment visible across the graded land; the sheer size of the construction zone dwarfs the surrounding Frontierland and Liberty Square areas.
Tall steel fencing columns are being erected along Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to screen construction from guests, with a recently cast concrete retaining wall for Piston Peak visible at the bottom right of the frame. Labeled imagery identifies the Utilidor access point, displaced tree storage, and the filled-in Rivers of America service canal.
Aerial video and stills show the retaining wall snaking along the Frontierland boardwalk from Big Thunder Mountain toward the former Liberty Square Riverboat Landing, and a backstage viaduct under construction that will connect to the Walt Disney World water management system.
The retaining wall is rising along the Frontierland edge of the Piston Peak site, with the few remaining transplanted trees staged at the center of the former Rivers of America footprint and concrete pipes staged beyond Big Thunder Mountain.
Newly added concrete forms at lower elevation near Big Thunder Mountain show vertical rebar indicating the start of a possible retaining wall or structural support element for the Piston Peak ride layout; the forms snake along the boardwalk from a point near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad toward the former Liberty Square Riverboat Landing.
The first concrete forms placed within the Piston Peak National Park construction zone are visible, positioned in the area near the former Tom Sawyer Island boat launch and adjacent to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad footprint.
First aerial construction photos show early concrete formwork and rebar in the former Rivers of America basin, representing the first visible signs of new structural work for Piston Peak National Park.
The former Rivers of America basin is fully cleared, with heavy equipment reshaping a large swath of land that now stretches from the Haunted Mansion area across toward Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Bulk earthwork is underway as crews level the site, marking a clear transition from demolition into active site preparation for the new land.
Aerial photos taken from approximately 3,100 feet show ongoing demolition of the Rivers of America and expanded work beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, with the cleared site and staging areas for the Piston Peak and Villains Land projects visible across the full northwest corner of Magic Kingdom.
Demolition of Fort Langhorn on Tom Sawyer Island is well advanced, with much of the fort structure reduced to debris piles and construction equipment positioned around the former site. The surrounding land shows significant clearing work progressing as part of the broader site transformation for Piston Peak National Park.
